By default we count Monday through Friday as working days and remove any public holiday that falls on those weekdays. A bank holiday that lands on a Saturday is not subtracted again, because it was never a working day to begin with; this is how UK statutory holiday counting works and how most European payroll systems treat the calendar. A bank holiday that falls on a Sunday in the United States is technically observed on the following Monday, and Nager.Date already encodes the observed dates, so the result you see already reflects the substitute day.
We use the public Nager.Date dataset, which collates official holidays for around 110 countries and is licensed CC-BY. It updates when governments change their schedules, which happens more often than you would think. Country-specific religious holidays and regional holidays are included where Nager.Date marks them as national. Procurement and finance teams use the working-day count for purchase order lead times and invoice terms ("net 30 working days" means something different to "net 30 days"). HR uses it for statutory and contractual leave. Project managers use it for capacity planning when a delivery date crosses a long weekend or a national holiday. Solicitors use it for service of process deadlines that are stated in clear days. The math is the same whichever industry you are in: count weekdays, subtract weekday holidays, and you have your answer.
The calculator walks every date from your start date to your end date, both included. Each date faces two tests: Saturdays and Sundays are dropped first, then any date on the selected country's public holiday list is dropped too. Whatever survives is a working day. Alongside the headline number you also get the raw weekday count, the number of weekend days, and how many holidays fell on weekdays, so you can trace exactly where every day in the range went. Ranges that cross a year boundary work the same way; the holiday lists for each year touched are fetched and merged before counting.
Take Monday 21 December 2026 through Thursday 31 December 2026 with the United States selected. The range spans 11 calendar days. Nine of them are weekdays, because 26 and 27 December fall on a Saturday and Sunday. Christmas Day 2026 lands on Friday 25 December, a weekday, so one more day comes off. The result is 8 working days. Switch the country and the number can move again: anywhere that observes an extra weekday holiday inside that window loses a further day, while a country with nothing scheduled keeps all nine weekdays. This is why a project plan quoted in working days should always state which country's calendar it assumes.
Yes. The count is inclusive, so a range from Monday to Friday of the same week returns five working days, not four. If your contract uses the exclusive convention, move one endpoint by a day.
A 365-day year holds 52 full weeks plus one extra day, so it has 260 or 261 weekdays depending on which day of the week 1 January falls; a leap year can reach 262. Public holidays that land on weekdays then come off that total, so the final figure depends on the country and the year.
The weekday and weekend counts are identical everywhere; only the holiday subtraction changes. A country with two weekday holidays inside your range loses two more days than a country with none.
No. Weekend days were never in the working-day total, so a weekend holiday changes nothing unless the country observes a substitute day on a weekday, in which case the dataset lists the observed date and that date is subtracted instead.
Yes. The share button copies a link that carries the start date, end date, and country, so anyone who opens it sees the same range and the same result.
