School-year dates are useful for childcare planning, shared custody calendars, travel, tutoring, clubs, and family work schedules, but they are rarely national rules. The UK example follows one English local-authority pattern, while Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, academies, and independent schools can publish different dates. The US example uses one district calendar because K-12 dates are set locally by districts, often with state constraints. Australia uses NSW government school dates, and Canada uses an Ontario board-style calendar with the province's March break pattern.
Treat the table as a starting point for the 2026/27 academic year: term blocks show normal teaching periods, while break rows call out half-term, Thanksgiving, winter, March, Easter, and seasonal school holidays where relevant. The countdown is anchored to UTC dates so it stays stable across time zones. Before booking flights, camps, or leave, check the exact calendar from your school, council, district, province, state, or board.
School years follow a few recognisable structures, and knowing which one you are dealing with makes any calendar faster to read. The English pattern runs three long terms from early September to late July, each split by a one-week half-term. The North American pattern runs two semesters from August or September to May or June, punctuated by named breaks rather than half-terms. The Australian pattern runs four shorter terms across a single calendar year, separated by two-week holidays, because the long summer break falls over December and January in the southern hemisphere.
| Example region | First day | Last day | Structure |
|---|---|---|---|
| England (Wandsworth, London) | 2 Sep 2026 | 22 Jul 2027 | 3 terms, 3 half-terms, Christmas and Easter breaks |
| United States (Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD, Texas) | 11 Aug 2026 | 21 May 2027 | 2 semesters, Thanksgiving, winter, and spring breaks |
| Australia (NSW government schools) | 28 Jan 2027 | 20 Dec 2027 | 4 terms with two-week holidays between each |
| Canada (Upper Canada DSB, Ontario) | 1 Sep 2026 | 28 Jun 2027 | 2 semesters, winter break and March break |
Families and colleagues split across countries can use the overlaps. In these example calendars, the English, Texan, and Ontarian winter breaks all begin on Monday 21 December 2026, though the returns differ: 4 January in England, 5 January in Texas, and a break ending 1 January in Ontario. The Texas spring break and the Ontario March break land on exactly the same week, 15 to 19 March 2027, a rare clean window for a cross-border family trip. The Australian calendar barely overlaps either: its longest holidays run through the northern-hemisphere term time, which is why relocating between hemispheres mid-year usually costs or repeats part of a school year.
The status card picks the entry that contains today's date. Because half-terms sit inside a term's date range, a break wins whenever both match, so during the October half-term you see the break with a count of days until lessons resume, not the autumn term. Between school years the card counts down to the next listed term start. All comparisons use whole UTC dates, which keeps the countdown identical for a parent in one country and a grandparent in another.
No. Each country is represented by one example region: an English local authority, a Texas school district, NSW government schools, and an Ontario board. Your own school, district, or trust publishes the calendar that actually applies.
Southern-hemisphere summer falls across December and January, so Australian schools take their long break then and align the academic year with the calendar year. In the NSW example, Term 1 begins on 28 January 2027 and Term 4 ends on 20 December 2027.
A one-week break in the middle of each UK term. The England example has three: 26 to 30 October 2026, 15 to 19 February 2027, and 31 May to 4 June 2027. Schools stay in session either side, so the break sits inside the term dates.
Not usually. US districts typically pause for named breaks instead: the Texas example takes Thanksgiving week from 23 to 27 November 2026, a winter break from 21 December to 4 January, and a spring break from 15 to 19 March 2027.
No. Term and break dates are compared as plain calendar dates in UTC, so the day counts stay the same wherever you open the page. Around midnight your local calendar may briefly disagree by a day.
