The results panel answers the same question twice, on purpose. The big line is a calendar breakdown: whole years, then whole months, then days, then the leftover hours, minutes, and seconds. The four small cells underneath are totals: the entire gap expressed in days only, hours only, minutes only, and seconds only. They disagree in flavour because they count differently.

Take 10 May 2023 at 09:00 UTC as the starting moment, and read the counter at 09:00 UTC on 2 July 2026. The calendar line shows 3 years, 1 month, 22 days. Check it forwards: 10 May 2023 plus three years is 10 May 2026, plus one month is 10 June 2026, plus 22 days is 2 July 2026. The totals tell the same story in fixed units: 1,149 total days, because the three year-steps cover 366 + 365 + 365 days (2024 was a leap year) and 10 May to 2 July adds 53 more. Multiply out and you get 27,576 total hours, 1,654,560 total minutes, and 99,273,600 total seconds, each ticking upward live.
A month is not a fixed amount of time. One month after 15 January is 15 February, a step of 31 days; one month after 15 February is 15 March, a step of 28 or 29. When the day-of-month of the later date is smaller than the earlier one, the calculator borrows the length of the previous month to keep the days figure non-negative. This is why two people who both quit a habit "four months ago" can have day counts that differ by several days. When precision matters, compare the totals, not the calendar line.
Enter a moment that has not happened yet and the counter flips to Time until, counting down with the same breakdown. That makes the page double as a long-horizon countdown for things measured in years, like a visa expiry or a mortgage end date, where months and years matter more than a wall of seconds.
A static "it has been three months" loses its motivational pull pretty quickly. A counter that ticks up by the second turns a quiet milestone into a visible streak. People bookmark this kind of page for sobriety, exercise streaks, project anniversaries, and time since a major life event. The math is simple, but the psychological effect of watching the numbers move is the point.
When you pick a date and a time without a zone, the calculator interprets the wall-clock you typed inside the zone selector. That matters around daylight saving boundaries. If you quit smoking at 11pm London time on a spring-forward Sunday, the counter behaves correctly because we resolve the input to an exact UTC instant before doing any math. The result is then compared against the current UTC time on your device, so the count keeps ticking accurately wherever you happen to be reading the page.

Because real years vary in length. The calendar breakdown steps through actual months and leap years, while the totals divide raw elapsed time by fixed units. Three calendar years that include a leap year cover 1,096 days, not 1,095.
Total days. It is unambiguous, always comparable, and never wobbles with month lengths. The years-months-days line reads more naturally in conversation, but two streaks of '3 months' can differ by up to three days.
