Why weeks make time visible
A year is easy to talk about and hard to feel. A week is small enough to remember: the meeting you kept, the dinner you postponed, the Saturday that disappeared into errands, the quiet hour you actually protected. This grid turns a 90-year life into 4,680 squares, so the scale becomes visible without turning it into a sermon. Filled squares are weeks that have passed since the birthday you enter. Empty squares are still ahead. The amber outline marks the week you are in now. It is not meant to be grim; it is meant to be concrete.
Use the life-expectancy field as a planning assumption, not a prediction. The grid itself stays at 90 years because that is the familiar Wait But Why shape, while the remaining-weeks statistic adjusts to the lifespan you choose. For exact calendar age in years, months, and days, use the age calculator. If you want a stranger angle on the same birthday, the age on other planets tool converts your elapsed Earth time into Mercury, Mars, and Neptune years. This page keeps the math deliberately simple: local calendar days, full elapsed weeks, and ordinary milestone dates you can put on a calendar. The point is not to optimize every square. It is to notice that they are real, limited, and still yours to spend.
The arithmetic behind 4,680 squares
Ninety rows of 52 squares make 4,680, and every square stands for seven real days counted from the birth date you enter. That makes each row 364 days, one or two days short of a calendar year, so row boundaries drift slowly away from birthdays. Over the whole grid the drift accumulates to about 16 weeks, which is why a true 90 year span contains roughly 4,696 full weeks rather than 4,680. Hover any square to see its week number, the age it represents, and the exact seven day date range it covers.
What the numbers look like at age 30
A person on their 30th birthday has lived about 10,957 days, which is 1,565 complete weeks, just over a third of the grid. The weeks lived counter increases by one every seven days from the birth date, so it always ticks over on the weekday you were born. The first billion second milestone is still ahead at that point: one billion seconds equals roughly 31.7 years, so it arrives about 88 weeks after the 30th birthday. The milestone cards show the wait in years while it is far off, months as it gets closer, and days for the final stretch.
Reading the controls honestly
The life expectancy field changes only the weeks remaining statistic and whether the milestone cards stay reachable; the grid itself always draws 90 years so the picture stays comparable between visits and between people. Filled squares are complete weeks already lived, empty squares are weeks that have not started, and the amber outline marks the one in progress. Everything on the page is computed in your browser from the date you type, and that date appears in a URL only when you create a share link.
Questions this grid tends to raise
Is a year exactly 52 weeks?
No. A common year is 52 weeks and one day, and a leap year is 52 weeks and two days. The grid uses 52 columns per row as a visual convention, which is why a row is slightly shorter than a year of age.
Why does the grid ignore my life expectancy setting?
The 90 by 52 shape is the familiar one popularised by the Wait But Why essay, so it stays fixed and comparable. Your setting still drives the weeks remaining figure and whether distant milestones show as reachable.
What exactly counts as a lived week?
A square fills only after a full seven day stretch measured from your birth date has finished. The week currently in progress is outlined in amber rather than filled.
What is the billion second milestone?
It is the next multiple of one billion seconds since birth. The first lands at about 31.7 years old and the second at about 63.4; if the next one falls beyond your chosen life expectancy, the card says so instead of showing a countdown.
Can I put the grid on my own site?
Yes. The embed button generates a snippet preloaded with the birth date you entered, and the grid renders inside your page with a small attribution link back to this tool.
